Fort Worth Officer-Involved Shooting

What we know:

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 4200 block of Bonita Drive in the River Oaks neighborhood shortly after 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, police encountered a man firing a handgun in the street.

A doorbell camera on a neighbor's home captured the shocking video of what happened. FOX 4 stopped the video before the moment officers fired shots.

According to department officials, officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon. When the man ignored commands and began advancing toward them, an officer opened fire, striking him.

Officers provided immediate medical aid until paramedics arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. No officers or bystanders were injured during the encounter.

What they're saying:

Fort Worth Police Chief Eddie Garcia said his officers did what they had to do to keep people safe.

Some neighbors are thankful.

"Thank God it was over there, everybody's safe over here. Where we're at, kids," Thomas Rangel said. "Especially right down the street. Bullets have no eyes."

"He was shooting that way, toward houses. The cops said drop the gun, drop the gun. I guess he didn't want to," added Roberto Zapata, another neighbor.

But others are upset over speculation that the suspect was suffering a mental health crisis.

"I just glad the cops didn't kill him. They did what they had to do but I'm glad they didn't kill him," Zapata said.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect, and the motive behind the initial gunfire remains unclear.
