'Empire' actor guest conductor of Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra

'Empire' fans know him as the smooth talking detective who's out to bring down the show's star character Lucious Lyon, but it’s a different art form that's landed Damon Gupton at Fort Worth's Bass Performance Hall.

In addition to being a busy television and film actor, Gupton is also an accomplished classical music conductor. That sometimes catches folks off-guard.

"They're like what, you do what?! Yeah I do that...they're kind of shocked,” Gupton said. “Well what does a conductor look like.”

This weekend he's directing the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in a performance that celebrates the music of Hollywood films.

As a boy Gupton fell in love with film scores and he hopes to see movie music return to its glory of the past.

"If you hear 'da dum, da dum' you say that's Jaws.  Or da da duh duh dom, that's Star Wars. The music has character. I think that exists somewhat today but not as prominently,” Gupton said.
