Crash on I-30 in Mesquite prompts hazmat scare

MESQUITE, Texas - Parts of Interstate 30 in Mesquite were shut down Thursday morning because of a crash that reportedly involved hazardous materials. But as it turns out, there was never any threat.

Authorities said two vehicles crashed in the eastbound lanes of I-30 near Galloway Avenue around 6:30 a.m.

A person in one of the cars ran to a nearby QuikTrip gas station for help. He claimed to have hazardous materials on him and in his car.

Dallas Fire-Rescue’s hazmat team responded to both the wreck and the gas station. Video showed them walking around in protective gear.

However, authorities said it was a false alarm. The crash victim did not have anything on him and there was nothing harmful in his car.

FOX 4 traffic reporter Chip Waggoner said eastbound I-30 at Galloway Avenue has since reopened. The north and southbound LBJ Freeway ramps to I-30 are also open again.
