ARLINGTON, Texas - The door to the future swung wide open Tuesday night for a North Texas teen, thanks to celebrity power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z.
Mansfield Summit High School senior Shaykeim Powe was one of 11 deserving students around the country to receive a $100,000 Scholarship.
DJ Khaled announced the winner on behalf of the music icons. Powe and 19 other Boys and Girls Club of Arlington members also had front row seats in the VIP area of AT&T Stadium during Beyonce’s concert.
"I know if I didn't get the scholarship, I'd probably turn out a whole lot different. But I know with the scholarship, I'll be able to pay for all my classes and college and pay for my books and dorms and stuff,” Powe said. “Thank you Beyonce and Jay-Z for the scholarship. I really appreciate it. I wish I could have told y'all face to face that I really appreciated y'all for doing this."
The Boys and Girls Club says it was incredibly difficult deciding which student should be awarded the scholarship. The organization will give $25,000 scholarships to each of the other students in their top five.
