Police said they later identified 17-year-old Sergio Noe De Nova Duarte as the suspect thanks to some of the evidence he allegedly left behind at the crime scene.

A woman was attacked with a hammer while jogging in a Plano park Thursday afternoon, police reported.

What we know:

Plano police responded to an assault call around 5 p.m. Thursday in the 2300 block of Shiloh Road.

The woman was jogging in Bob Woodruff Park when an unknown man struck her with a hammer at least twice. She reportedly fought back, and the suspect fled the scene.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they later identified 17-year-old Sergio Noe De Nova Duarte as the suspect thanks to some of the evidence he allegedly left behind at the crime scene.

They also recovered the hammer, along with duct tape and other items that are not being disclosed at this time.

Duarte is charged with aggravated kidnapping with bodily injury, which is a first-degree felony. He also has an immigration hold.

What they're saying:

FOX 4 talked to two women who said they walk the park every day.

"I don't think you should walk alone. There's always two of us or three," said Mary Ann Missiner.

"We know lots of people who are out here. So if we see someone we don't know, we avoid that area," added Billie Chandler.

Plano police said that because of the arrest, there are no current public safety concerns. They still advise the public to remain aware of their surroundings.

What we don't know:

Police have not released a motive for the attack. They said information is being withheld due to the nature of the ongoing investigation.
