Parker County adds extra security for courthouse nativity scene

A nativity scene in Parker County is now being kept under constant surveillance — but not because of any threats of theft or vandalism.

A renovation project on the grounds of the county courthouse forced the nativity scene to be moved. Now, sheriff's deputies will keep an eye on the manger all day and all night.

Several years ago, the baby Jesus statue was stolen from the nativity scene in front of the Parker County courthouse. Since then, the county doesn't take chances — especially this year. The nativity scene is under 24-hour surveillance.

The nativity scene and the town Christmas tree are a favorite with families. This year, it's around the corner from the courthouse lawn because of restoration work.

Normally it's under the watchful eye of the courthouse cameras. This year, a special camera has been installed that is monitored 24-7 by the Parker County Sheriff's Office.

"It's a shame anywhere you go anymore seems like you have to have security cameras for stuff like that,” said Weatherford resident Karen Turner. “I'm glad they kept it, and it' still here. We come here all the time. Having it right here where we shop is really nice."

Parker County says there haven't been any incidents with the nativity scene in years and want to keep that way. Just in case, they want people to know someone is watching.

The county says it doesn't mind talking about the added security. It keeps people safe, and anyone intent on vandalism is on notice.

The security camera was put temporality for the Christmas display, but it may become permanent.
