11-year-old fatally shot after 'ding-dong ditch' prank in Houston
An 11-year-old in Houston is dead after reportedly being shot by a homeowner while playing a "ding-dong ditch" prank; ringing a doorbell, running away, and then being shot in the back.
Local perspective:
The senseless shooting has shaken the neighborhood.
Willy Barnes lives on Dahlia Drive, where the shooting happened.
"A bunch of gunshots woke me up out of sleep, sounded like it was in my backyard.," said Barnes.
"Overall, it's pretty quiet over here in this spot. We don't ever have anything happening in this spot."
One neighbor, who asked that we not use her name or show her face, lives across the street from the victim's home.
"I fell asleep watching Yellow Stone. I was awakened between 3:45 and 4 o'clock, and it were multiple gunshots, rapid gunshots. I went straight to the floor. Just straight to the floor. That was it. Didn't get to see who it was, what they were doing, just knew that...I knew from the sounds that somebody was being shot...or being shot at," she said.
"Those are the little girls I talk to on a regular basis, so, yeah, I was concerned about them."
The 11-year-old lives there with her mother and siblings.
"They need to catch him and get him off the streets because bullets don't have names on them. They can hit anybody at any time," said the nearby neighbor.
What we don't know:
Police are still trying to figure out who fired the shot and why.
No arrests have been made.
