SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Democrat Beto O’Rourke is traveling across the state to build support for his campaign for governor.
After joining the race Monday, he kicked off his campaign in San Antonio.
He kept his speech focused on a handful of issues including guns and abortion.
He criticized Gov. Greg Abbott who is seeking re-election for supporting a new state law that allows people to carry handguns without a permit or training and a restrictive law that bans most abortions.
"We're going to get back to the big things again that unite us, that bring us together and get us past the division, the smallness, the meanness of this moment," he said.
A recent poll puts O’Rourke nearly 10 points behind Abbott, who is facing several Republican primary challengers.
