2 killed by Arlington hit-and-run driver who veered off road, onto sidewalk
ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police are looking for a driver who killed two people after veering off the road and onto a sidewalk.
Police say the impact was so strong that the two pedestrians were thrown 50 to 100 feet away. The driver sped off without offering help.
What We Know:
It happened Sunday around 11:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Lamar Boulevard near Six Flags.
Arlington police say those two pedestrians, a man and a woman, both died at the scene.
"The Chevy Malibu will have heavy front-end damage to include the windshield. We did locate parts on the scene," said Arlington Police Sgt. Alex Rosado.
Investigators say the driver was in a silver Chevy Malibu and struck the man and woman with such force that one victim was thrown 50 feet. The other was discovered more than 100 feet from the point of impact.
"So the pedestrians are simply walking on the sidewalk. They’re not doing anything wrong. They are where they’re supposed to be," Rosado said. "The car, for whatever reason, leaves the main roadway there, strikes them, and immediately returns back into the roadway."
Traffic cameras recorded the crash. However, police say the video and still images from it are too graphic to release.
"The pedestrians and the vehicle were traveling eastbound. It struck the pedestrians from behind," Rosado said.
Police say the victims were not carrying identification.
The crash happened where there are several businesses, including hotels. They are pleading for help to track down the vehicle and the driver.
What We Don't Know:
Police have not been able to identify the driver. They also aren’t sure if the driver was drunk, under the influence of drugs or had a medical emergency.
It is unclear what caused the driver to veer onto the sidewalk.
"We haven’t ruled out any possibility of intoxication or anything like that. We simply don’t know," Rosado said. "We’re asking for the public’s help to help us identify this person. If you know who this is, or you may have a friend who has a silver Chevy Malibu with heavy front-end damage all of a sudden, please give us a call. You can call Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous."
The names of the victims have not been released.
