Texas bakery becomes pandemic success story
Tegan Smith-Cowan says she is glad she took a swing at a business venture during the pandemic. The Austin-based wife and mother had a shared experience with many other moms across the country. Her husband's job has him traveling often, and she was left to juggle managing homeschooling their two daughters, while also maintaining her responsibilities in the corporate world. To make matters more difficult, one of her daughters has an upper respiratory illness. "The stress of living through the pandemic combined with our daughter's compromised immune system really had me taking a second look at how I could reinvent myself while also taking care of my family," Smith Cowan said. Cowan started Hey Batta Batta Sweets & Treats. It's a play on words combining baseball themes with the idea of cake batter. She creates homemade baked goods and shippable treats for people across the country. It's a dream she has long had, but just recently decided to pursue. Now Smith-Cowan has a message for other women juggling professional life, motherhood, and the pandemic. "Take care of yourself the best way you can. As mothers, we are a lot of fo things to a lot of people, but if we burn ourselves out, we can't give any of those responsibilities, let alone can you give anything to yourself."
