A suspect shot twice in the chest Friday by a Grapevine police officer has died.

According to the Grapevine Police Department, a patrol officer was trying to pull a driver over around 6:30 p.m. Friday. That driver led the office on a brief pursuit into Euless, stopping just south of the Grapevine city limits in approximately the 2500 block of State Highway 121 on the exit to Cheek Sparger Rd.

Police say the suspect stopped on the exit ramp and got out of his car, forcing the officer to shoot him.

The suspect was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital but later died. He has been identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner as Ruben Villalpando, 31.

It is also unknown whether or not the Villalpando was armed. Police say he must have posed a threat for the officer to have shot him.

The officer involved was not injured. He's been on the force for two years with the Grapevine Police Department.

The officer will be on paid leave during the investigation, per protocol with any officer-involved shooting.

This matter is under investigation by the Grapevine and Euless Police Departments.
