United States military forces launched a new round of strikes against Iran on Thursday, with Iran responding by targeting U.S. allies in the region.

The new strikes come a day after President Trump warned further, stronger military strikes would be coming in response to recent attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

US strikes more targets

What they're saying:

United States Cental Command said they hit approximately 90 targets including air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities and military logistics infrastructure in Iran.

CENTCOM says the strikes are designed to degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Shipping vessels attacked

The backstory:

The renewed tensions stemmed from several drone attacks Iran initiated in the Strait of Hormuz.

British military officials said three ships were attacked by drones. One caught fire off the coast of Oman and two more also sustained damage but were able to continue through the strait.

The other side:

Iran has not directly claimed responsibility of the assault but state television said the ship ignored warnings.

Iran response to attacks

Iran's Health Ministry said 14 people have been killed and 78 others wounded during two days of U.S. airstrikes.

Thursday's strikes targeted sites in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Bahrain is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters.

The funeral for Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is scheduled to conclude Thursday. Negotiations between the United States and Iran have been paused during the daylong procession. However, the latest exchange of attacks has raised new uncertainty over whether talks will resume or if the two sides can ultimately reach a peace agreement.
