Manassas shooting: Workplace violence suspect dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound, police say

MANASSAS, Va. - The suspect in a northern Virginia workplace shooting that left three people in critical condition Wednesday morning died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police pursuit, authorities said.

Virginia State Police troopers spotted the suspect, 37-year-old Marvin Grant, driving southbound on Interstate 81 near mile marker 235 in Augusta County following the shooting at a United Rentals facility in Manassas.

Grant pulled into a rest area at mile marker 232, where troopers attempted a traffic stop. He exited his vehicle briefly, got back in, and continued driving southbound on I-81, initiating a police pursuit.

Grant pulled over again near mile marker 227 and exited the vehicle with a firearm pointed at his head. A Virginia State Police tactical team and negotiator responded to the scene.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., police say Grant suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. State police confirmed officers did not use force during the incident.

At a news briefing Wednesday morning, Manassas City Police Chief Douglas W. Keen said officers responded to a United Rentals facility on Wellington Road in Manassas around 7 a.m. following multiple calls reporting an active shooter at the workplace. Responding officers found three victims, all employees of the facility. Two victims were found in a garage area, while a third walked in an office area in the garage.

Two of the victims were transported to Prince William Hospital, and one was transported to Fairfax Hospital. All three remain in critical condition.

Investigators said Grant was a coworker with a North Carolina address. Authorities believe an altercation at the site led to the shooting, though police are still reviewing video evidence and have not determined the exact number of shots fired. Keen noted that police had no prior interactions with Grant before Wednesday's incident.

Numerous other employees were on site at the time of the shooting. Area schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution. 

School officials said Jennie Dean Elementary School will remain in "Secure the Building" status for the remainder of the school day as a precautionary measure. Parents and community members are advised to follow directions from school leadership.
