Saturday may have been the hottest day of the year so far, but many outdoor events went on as scheduled.
Around 60 local soccer teams participated in a qualifying soccer tournament at Richland College Saturday morning, with temperatures reaching into the 90s before noon.
Even the blistering hot sun couldn’t keep the parents away from cheering on their kids. Families came armed with sunscreen and coolers full of fluids, ready to take on triple-digit temps.
Tournament organizers started games as early as 7 A.M. to avoid the hottest hours of the day and coaches made sure to rotate players and give frequent water breaks. MedStar mobilized their extreme heat policy, prioritizing outside heat calls to limit head exposure for parents and first responders.
“It just comes with the territory,” said parent Elias Cruz, “if you're gonna put your son through in some kind of sports, or daughter, you tough it out.”
Dallas and Fort Worth opened community centers, along with other entities like the Salvation Army, as cooling stations for those in need.
