US strikes Iran: What we know
New details continue to emerge after the US and Israel conducted a joint strike operation on Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Benjamin Anthony at Miryam Institute joined LiveNOW's Josh Breslow to discuss the latest.
An all-girls school was hit in Iran in Saturday’s strikes, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.
Here is what’s been reported:
Iran girls school bombed
What we know:
The state-run IRNA news agency was reporting Sunday that at least 165 people were killed when a strike hit an all girls school in Minab, which is in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province.
A local official said among the dead were students, parents and school staff.

What we don't know:
It’s unclear why the school may have been a target or involved in the strikes.
The New York Times reported that the school is adjacent to a naval base belonging to the country’s most powerful military force, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, or IRGC. Another video verified by The Times on Saturday showed a strike hitting the same IRGC base.

What they're saying:
Hossein Kermanpour, a spokesman for Iran’s health ministry, said on social media that mostly "young martyrs" were killed at the school.
The other side:
The Israeli military said it was not aware of strikes in the area. The U.S. military said it was looking into the reports.
US and Israel attack Iran
The backstory:
The U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Tehran, and President Donald Trump says the U.S. is starting major combat operations against Iran.
This is the second time in eight months that the Trump administration has attacked the Islamic Republic during talks over its nuclear program. Trump says Iran keeps pursuing nuclear work and missile development, and he warns U.S. casualties are possible.
Iran retaliated by firing missiles and drones toward Israel and U.S. military bases in the region, and exchanges of fire continued into the night.
On Sunday, the U.S. confirmed three service members were killed, and five others were seriously wounded.
Iranian authorities said more than 200 people have been killed since the start of the U.S. and Israeli strikes.

Meanwhile:
The strikes and counterattacks continued Sunday, with Trump earlier saying they will continue through the week or as long as necessary.
Iran has vowed revenge after the killing of its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose death was confirmed late Saturday. The 86-year-old has no immediate successor, leaving the country's leadership in limbo. A new leader is expected to be announced early this week.
