Chief Garcia on 58-year-old DPD officer's death

Officer Christopher Jackson, a 31-year veteran of the force who was assigned to Southwest Patrol, died due to a medical condition. Garcia said that the officer had just put in his retirement papers.

A longtime Dallas police officer died after heading home from work Thursday evening.

DPD said that Officer Christopher Jackson, a 31-year veteran of the force who was assigned to Southwest Patrol, died due to a medical condition.

Jackson was 58-years-old.

An officer assist call was issued at an apartment complex on Duncanville Road in West Oak Cliff just after 4 p.m.

Police say the officer collapsed near a parking lot after returning home from a shift.

An apartment employee and officers performed CPR while waiting for Dallas Fire Rescue to respond.

The officer was then taken to Methodist Dallas Medical where he was declared dead.

On Friday Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said the officer had just recently handed in his retirement papers.

"When I walked into that hospital, it was a non-stop conversation with every family member and other officers about how amazing this officer was," said Garcia. "He was a great man. He's going to be very sorely missed."

The exact cause of the officer's death has not been released.
