A Dallas man is charged with threatening to shoot students at a school for the deaf in Austin.
Andre Williams, 30, was arrested Thursday by Dallas police after threatening to shoot up the Texas School for the Deaf. Williams is a former student.
According to court documents, Williams told a friend that he has three guns, including two handguns and a rifle, and that when he ran out of ammunition for the rifle, he was going to use his pistol. Williams allegedly told the friend that this would happen soon.
Arrest warrant affidavits say the threat was made after Williams' girlfriend broke off their relationship.
“We took this very seriously,” said Sr. Cpl. Monica Cordova with the Dallas Police Department. “Austin took it seriously. Once they give us that information, our department even contacted the schools over here, because we didn't know if the threat was made for only one school…we had to take every step to make sure our students were safe as well.
The Texas School for the Deaf issued a statement shortly after Williams was in custody, saying, “The good news is that at approximately 10:00 pm Thursday evening the subject who made the threats was arrested in Dallas.
Our school safety plans and drills are continually updated to make sure our protocols offer the maximum safety and security for our school."
Williams will be charged with making a terroristic threat, which is a third degree felony.
Austin police are expected to go to Dallas Monday and bring Williams back to Austin to face charges.
