Arlington PD: Suspect dead after shooting officer

A suspect was killed and two officers were injured in a shootout Tuesday afternoon when Arlington police and SWAT tried to serve a warrant.

The shooting happened near Green Oaks in the 4300 block of Kelly Hill in South Arlington around 4:30 p.m. when officers were trying to serve a narcotics search warrant at a home. When they approached the home, someone inside opened fire, hitting an officer. Officers returned fire.

An Arlington Police Department spokesperson says an officer was shot multiple times "in the lower extremities" but is expected to be okay.

Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson says the officer is "alert, stable and receiving excellent care."

A second officer's hand was injured likely by shrapnel but was treated at the scene.

Three to four people who were inside the suspect's house were detained and taken in for questioning. Their hands will be checked for gunpowder to see if multiple people fired at officers.

After a five-hour standoff, police were able to enter the home and found one suspect dead near the doorway. A rifle was found underneath him, and police believe he was the shooter. Police used tear gas and a robot to check inside for any other possible suspects.

During the standoff, people who lived nearby were evacuated from their homes as a precaution.

The suspect's name has not been released.

The injured officer is expected to stay in the hospital overnight. He will undergo surgery on Wednesday.
