19-year-old dies after shooting at Oak Cliff basketball court
A 19-year-old died after being shot while playing basketball with his cousin Wednesday night in an Oak Cliff park.
Patrick Powell was shot about 8:30 p.m. when a vehicle drove by and opened fire on the young men at Miller Family Park in the 2800 block of Persimmon Road.
Powell was struck by at least one bullet during the drive-by shooting, but he was not specifically targeted. He was rushed to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas in critical condition and died Thursday afternoon.
Dallas police said Thursday that two juveniles, ages 13 and 14, have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault for Powell's shooting.
Family members on Thursday said they had been at his Powell's bedside nearly all night and day. Clifton Powell said his son was studying to be a movie producer.
"He was a good kid, played basketball, was going to college,” he said. “He didn't deserve this, and I wish all this would stop."
The charges against the juveniles are expected to be upgraded to murder now that Powell has died.
