Rain and cold doesn't stop some athletes

RICHARDSON, Texas - Some runners are trying to get their miles in even though it’s cold and wet outside.

FOX 4’s Shannon Murray found a few dedicated people on the track at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson early Tuesday morning.

Members of the group said they train several days a week. Usually, there are about 30 people with them but only a handful showed up in the rain. As long as there is no lightning, they said they’ll run rain or shine.

Of course, one man who stopped to talk to Shannon got a few laps in and then decided he’d had enough.

“Well, the north to south wind is killing us. When you turn around the track and head north, it’s pretty brutal. So the south is nice. Heading back north is really tough. So I’m mailing it in this morning,” Ryan Burns said.

The rain won’t stop practice for the J.J. Pearce football team either. On Monday, the freshman squad practiced in the rain. The varsity squad should be out Tuesday morning. Per district policy, the coaches will cancel if there’s lightning within 10 miles.

The field is pretty saturated but the team’s coach said if they don’t practice in the rain they won’t get much practice at all. Plus, they’ll be prepared in case there’s rain again on Friday night.
