Man injured in Forney officer-involved shooting

An off-duty police officer was involved in a shooting in Kaufman County, east of Dallas.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday near Interstate 20 and Farm-to-Market Road 741.

According to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department, Officer C. Prewitt, a Forney Police Department officer who was in plain clothes and with his family, stopped to help someone who he thought was a stranded motorist.

But the sheriff’s department said the officer ended up witnessing a domestic dispute between 24-year-old Cody Wesberry and two other family members.

Officer Prewitt allegedly identified himself and then returned to his vehicle to call 911. That’s when the sheriff’s department said Wesberry aggressively tried to get into the officer’s vehicle.

The officer opened fire, striking Wesberry three times, the sheriff’s department said.

Wesberry was flown to a hospital in stable condition. The officer was not hurt.

The Texas Rangers will help the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office investigate the case.
