About 60 homes in Somervell County were evacuated Thursday morning because of a massive fuel spill on Highway 144 near the Paluxy River.

County officials said a tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of combination diesel and gasoline fuel overturned on the highway around 8 a.m.

The contents of the tank leaked onto the highway and all southbound lanes were shut down. Homes close to the accident were also evacuated as a precaution.

A relocation center was opened at First Baptist Church in Glen Rose for all those who were forced out of their homes. No schools were affected, officials said.

Wreckers and hazmat crews are still working clean up the highway. It is expected to be closed into the early evening.

Officials do not believe any of the fuel leaked into the Paluxy River.
