Kids learn life skills at "firefighter camp"

Children at one North Texas summer camp will not be playing games. They will be learning some unique skills from firefighters.

The Saginaw Fire Department is hosting fire camp this week. The campers are all 10-year-olds who were selected by their teachers and invited by the fire department to participate.

They’re learning firefighting skills like tying knots, putting out flames and, of course, get to have water fights with the hoses. They’re also learning the importance of teamwork and physical fitness, as well as gaining confidence to solve complex problems.

On Wednesday the campers had a chance to put some of their new skills to the test and rappel down a building.

“The first time is terrifying and once you do it again it’s like, ‘Oh well!’” said Brooklyn Burch, a camper.

“It is set up exactly like a rookie school would be. We have a gentleman that acts as a drill instructor. He keeps them in line and yells at them. They do pushups when they get things wrong,” said Lt. John Tadlock with the Saginaw Fire Department.

Good Day’s Shannon Murray took a shot at going down the wall… in heels. She made it down but not as quickly as the campers.
