Snow possible Thursday in North Texas

North Texans are preparing for a chance of possible snow and sleet for Thursday.

While temperatures will be in the 50s Thursday morning, there will be a big drop that will take place during afternoon hours into the 30s late with 35mph winds. Snow showers are possible from DFW north and west. Most will melt, but some may coat the roads in our northwest counties.

TxDOT is not taking any chances with the possibility of snow. Workers already began preventative work Wednesday on the highways in Fort Worth and in Dallas. But it's just the beginning of what it's crews will be doing over the next 48 hours.

"During these situations, our crews go 24/7,” explained Val Lopez with TxDOT Fort Worth. “They work on 12-hour shifts around the clock until the weather gets better."

Trucks were out before the Wednesday afternoon rush hour spreading brine on highways all over Dallas, Tarrant and Collin counties.

"The idea there is if we apply it to the bridge decks, it dries,” Lopez explained. “And when precipitation comes in, it mixes with that brine and lowers the freezing point of the water. It is essentially a form of antifreeze."

And if the precipitation starts sticking to the roads, TxDOT will transition to sand trucks and pull crews from road construction projects if needed until things clear up.

With several North Texas campuses hosting soccer tournaments on Thursday, athletic trainers will be watching the wind chill.

Players like 17-year-old Arlington Heights senior Dorian Villegas saw the forecast then went out and bought warm clothes for the upcoming game.

“It's gonna be freezing, so I don't know,” the player said. “We have to do a lot of stretching and a lot of warming up before the game, so it's gonna be intense."

Some school districts already took to social media to give students, parents and staff and a heads up, asking them to keep an eye on their app for any alerts.

If any accumulation happens that will affect teams getting to the games, the school districts will change accordingly.
