Proposed bill aims to give parents paid time off for kids' school activities

A state lawmaker is pushing for more paid time off for employees with children in the hope that it will allow parents to spend more time involved in their child's school activities.
Under the proposed legislation, authored by assemblyman Mike Gatto, parents of children in kindergarten through 8th grade would receive three extra paid time off days per year.
California law already requires companies to allow their employees to take off up to 40 unpaid hours to attend their child's school activities, but companies are not required to pay for those days off.
Critics of the legislation, mostly businesses, are concerned about the money these extra paid time off hours could cost them.
Assemblyman Gatto says the legislation would not include small businesses.
