Mom criticizes sales lady who said her daughter needed Spanx

A Kansas mother’s open letter to a sales associate at Dillard’s is going viral. She’s standing up for her daughter’s right to feel good in a dress.

Megan Harris posted a picture of her teenage daughter wearing a stunning red dress that she picked out at Dillard’s last week.

In the caption, Harris said her daughter didn’t really care for her choice, but agreed to try it on anyway.

“I told her how grown up it made her look and she smiled, and told me this made her look too but still, she let me take a picture,” she wrote.

The mother and daughter were then approached by a sales associate who told the teenager she’d need to wear Spanx if she wanted to wear the dress to an upcoming formal.

“I told you that she was just fine without SPANX. You continued to argue with me,” Harris wrote.

She later wrote the Facebook letter – with her daughter’s permission. She described the girl as someone who is athletic and beautiful, not someone who needed a stranger telling her she isn't perfect.

“I wish I had told you how many girls suffer from poor self image and telling them they need something to make them perfect can be very damaging. Girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are perfect because that is how God made them. If they feel good in a dress, that is all that should matter,” she wrote.

Harris said she doesn’t want the woman fired. She just wants to encourage her and others to never say such things to a girl.

“You never know what negative or positive thoughts they are thinking about themselves,” she wrote.

The letter has since been shared over 30,000 times. The family has gotten lots of kind comments and Harris’ daughter has been complimented on her appearance in the dress.
