Pro-gun groups plan mock mass shooting near UT

Two gun rights groups are scheduled to hold an open carry demonstration and mock mass shooting near UT on Saturday.

The event is being hosted by Come And Take It Texas and DontComply.com, according to a Facebook event page, and it’s being held to work to end gun free zones.

The event will include an open carry demonstration before a “crisis performance.”

A post on the event page from Come And Take It Texas says, “In the wake of yet another mass shooting one thing is clear, Gun Free Zones are killing us. These target rich environments are letting our children be murdered by evil people. Now is the time to stand up, take a walk, and put pressure on politicians to ban Gun Free Zones.”

A spokesman for the groups, Matthew Short, told the Austin American-Statesman that actors will be “shot” with cardboard weapons, and that there will be fake blood and gun noises from bullhorns. Some actors will pose as rescuers who also have cardboard weapons.

Originally, the event was to be scheduled on campus. However, UT Austin officials said Wednesday that the groups may not hold the event on campus.

“Within the university community, the campus is a place for the vigorous exchange of diverse viewpoints, which is an essential part of the educational experience,” a UT spokesperson said in a statement. “The property or buildings owned or controlled by UT Austin are not, however, open to outside groups for assembly, speech, or other activities, including theatrical performances, as are the public streets, sidewalks, and parks. Only the university itself, faculty, staff and student groups may engage in such activities on campus.”

The Facebook page for the event was updated Wednesday afternoon to say that the event will now be held on a public sidewalk off campus.
