NFL Twitter account hacked

The Twitter account for the National Football League was hacked on Tuesday afternoon.

A tweet appeared at 12:36 announcing that commissioner Roger Goodell had passed away.  The post ended with #RIP.

The tweet was quickly deleted but not before it was retweeted more than 500 times and turned into a screen grab and passed around social media.

It was one of three tweets that went out during a short period of time.  One read, "Oi, I said Roger Goodell has died.  Don't delete that tweet."

The last deleted tweet read:  "OK, OK, you amateur detectives win.  Good job"

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirms the account was hacked and says the league is looking into what happened.

It is the latest high profile incident in which a prominent Twitter account was hacked.  Most recently, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's little-used Twitter account was hacked.
