It's official: Mavericks re-sign Dirk Nowitzki for 21st season with franchise

It's now official. Dirk Nowitzki is returning to the Mavericks.

Dallas announced the re-signing Monday morning, several days after the deal was first reported to be in the works. It was never a matter of if Nowitzki would put pen to paper, but when.

The Mavericks, with Dirk's blessing, declined the option on his contract when they were chasing DeAndre Jordan in free agency.

The Dallas superstar will reportedly be paid $5 million to play in his 21st NBA season, which is an NBA record for a player to suit up for a single franchise. Kobe Bryant played 20 seasons with the Lakers.

Nowitzki averaged 12 points and 5.7 rebounds in 77 games last season. His 24.7 minutes per game were the fewest since his rookie year.

The Mavs open training camp in two months.
