'No pass, no play' rule part of Ross Perot's legacy in Texas
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Part of late billionaire H. Ross Perot's legacy is a clear-cut rule about Texas high school sports: If a student can't pass class, they can't play.
The law, with its catchy "No Pass, No Play" nickname, has been in place since 1984. When first signed by Gov. Mark White, coaches and communities worried their best players, most notably in football, would be sidelined and troubled students would drop out of school.
The resulting firestorm helped lead to White's re-election defeat in 1986. Although softened a bit to help students get back on the field quicker if their grades improve, the law is still in place.Read the full article
Mount Vernon community weighs in on controversial Art Briles hire
The school board in the East Texas town of Mount Vernon faced the public for the first time since hiring a controversial football coach.
In May, Mount Vernon ISD hired former Baylor University head football coach Art Briles.
Briles was fired three years ago in the midst of a sexual assault scandal involving some of his players accused of sexual assault. He has denied allegations that he helped in the cover-up.Read the full article
Texas high school football referee apologizes for racist remarks
A high school football referee is apologizing after audio recordings of him spewing racist remarks were made public. The recordings were obtained during a legal investigation into the non-profit organization-- the Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO).
In the clip, Mike Atkinson, owner of Atkinson Farms in Spring and a high school football referee with a 45-year tenure is heard using inappropriate and racist language during what he says was supposed to be a private conversation.
