Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick will seek re-election in 2018

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick had Austin abuzz with questions about his political ambitions on Monday.

The conservative Republican announced Monday that he will seek re-election. Before his announcement there was speculation that he would challenge Gov. Greg Abbott next year.

Patrick said he wanted to address the rumors and assured he will not run against his friend.

Patrick opens this legislative session with the so-called Bathroom Bill at the top of his agenda. It would require people to use the bathroom of their birth gender in state-owned buildings and public schools.

The more moderate Gov. Abbott has been quiet on the measure that is opposed by business groups.
