Cruz hits O'Rourke on Trump impeachment comment during Fort Worth campaign stop

Three days before early voting begins, Senator Ted Cruz attacked his challenger’s record in a similar tone to some of his TV ads.

The crowd of supporters in red Tarrant County stood for the senator’s entire campaign speech at the stockyards. Cruz campaigned in the area while O’Rourke held an event in South Texas on Friday.

Cruz played up O’Rourke’s statement during Thursday night’s CNN Town Hall event that he would vote to impeach the president.

“Beto O’Rourke is the only Democratic nominee in the country to come out explicitly for impeaching President Trump,” Cruz said.

One detractor interrupted Cruz, and the senator ran with it.

“Stop lying,” the man yelled out.

“We deal with something called facts,” Cruz responded from the stage. “I know they can make your pretty head hurt.”

By contrast, O’Rourke barely mentioned Cruz at a campaign event in South Texas, which he streamed live on Facebook.

He focused on healthcare for all, better teacher pay and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. by their parents.

“What if as Texans, regardless of party, we are gonna lead the way and free Dreamers of any deportation by making them citizens so they can contribute to their full potential here in this country?” O’Rourke said.

The challenger also worked to attract undecided voters.

“Your party affiliation not important, if you're a Republican and you’re here you're in the right place, if you are a Democrat and her you're here in the right place,” he said. “Independent, I'm glad you came, non-voters as well.”

Monday could be another turning point in this race. President Trump holds a rally for Cruz in Houston. Organizers on Thursday moved the event from a small arena to the home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets.

Cruz dismissed any worries of Trump harming him with Texas voters.

“There are some on far left, filled with hate and furry for the president, but they are already angry,” Cruz said.

Cruz said he doesn’t think the race will be that close, despite O’Rourke being the biggest Democratic fundraiser in the country and outraising Cruz by almost $40 million.
