Another statewide poll has Donald Trump up three points in Texas
The final debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump as the candidates met at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
A new poll released Thursday again showed Donald Trump holding onto a narrow three point lead in traditionally red Texas.
The Texas Tribune poll had Trump at 45 percent and Hillary Clinton at 42 percent – within the poll’s three point margin of error. Libertarian Gary Johnson was at seven percent and Green Party candidate Jill Stein had two percent.
“This is the trend that we’ve been seeing in polling for the last two weeks,” said Jim Henson, co-director of the poll and head of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin.
The poll found an enthusiasm gap between Clinton and Trump. 66 percent of Clinton voters said their vote was because they wanted her to be president. 53 percent of Trump’s voters said they were voting for him not because they liked him, but because they didn’t want Clinton elected.
Trump leads men in Texas 46 to 39 percent. The two evenly split women with 45 percent each.
Trump leads 57 to 28 percent with white voters in Texas. But Clinton leads with blacks 95 to 4 percent and 56 to 33 percent with Hispanic voters.
The Texas Tribune poll is one of multiple statewide polls that shows the margin in reliably red Texas is single digits. President Obama lost the state by 12 points in 2008 and 16 points in 2012.
The poll was conducted Oct. 14-23 and the margin of error was +/- 3.16 percent.
