At least 4 Texans being considered for Trump's cabinet

At least four Texans are currently being considered for cabinet posts in the President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. But many more could be headed to Washington.

While his transition team continues the vetting process, Trump has announced anyone who serves in his administration must pledge not to return to DC as a lobbyist for five years after they leave his White House.

SMU Political Science Professor Cal Jillson thinks the rule might give some pause to join the Trump administration

“Because after five years, their value is decreased cause people forget about them,” the professor said.

Merrie Spaeth, who served in the Reagan administration, says the lobbyist rules need to change.

“You come back and suddenly you're seeking favors for paid clients,” she said. “That’s really one of the reasons why government has gotten so big, so complicated, so expensive and so unresponsive.”

As people continue being interviewed by Mr. Trump and his team as potential cabinet members, Texans being considered are former Governor Rick Perry, Congressmen Mike McCaul and Jeb Hensarling and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz.

The U.S. senator met with Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence this week.

“I’m eager to work with the new president in whatever capacity where I can have the greatest impact defending the principals that I was elected to defend,” Cruz said.

He would not say if he had been offered Attorney General or any other cabinet seat.

"It's kind of a no-lose situation for me. I just couldn't be more excited about working with him," Dallas Congressman Hensarling said. "I didn't invite myself. He invited me up, so will leave it at that."

When Hensarling was asked if he would accept the job as Treasure Secretary if it’s offered to him, he said he would have to talk to his family about it. He also said he was not given any sort of timelines as to when a decision could be made.

Spaeth, who is heavily involved in political campaigns, says Trump has a deep reservoir of conservatives in Texas for many government posts.

“I think the Texans are being considered not just for cabinet and subcabinet posts or for White House appointments, but there all kinds of things that are really important,” she said. “Those spots – most people don’t hear about them. But they have enormous impact, and they'll be filled very carefully.”

Vice President Joe Biden said he’s not worried about the incoming administration’s readiness to take over the White House. He told reporters that no administration is ever ready on day one. Biden had a second meeting with Pence to talk about the transition.
