Woman killed by estranged boyfriend while staying at friend's home

A woman was shot to death by her estranged boyfriend while she was staying with her friend at a Grand Prairie home. The victim's friend tried to get help, but it wasn't in time. The boyfriend then killed himself.

Grand Prairie police say the friend had no idea the encounter ended in a murder-suicide until she got to the police department and asked detectives how it all ended.

The shooting happened in the 1300 block of Southeast Fourth Street early Thursday morning. Cameron Calcote says it was around midnight when he heard the commotion coming from his next-door neighbor's house. Minutes later, he went upstairs.

“I just heard arguing and yelling over there. I just didn't pay much attention to it. I was tired,” he recalled. “I was in the bathroom with the shower on, and I kind of felt it. It was pretty hard. I didn't hear it. I felt it.”

Calcote was talking about his neighbor who had jumped the fence that separates their two homes in order to escape a heated argument between a woman who was visiting and a man who showed up unannounced.

“Somehow, that male subject, whether he was invited or uninvited, came over and caused a disturbance that eventually resulted in a murder-suicide,” explained Officer Lyle Gensler.

Grand Prairie police say the man knew the combination code to the front door that gave him access to the home. According to investigators, he began to argue with both women inside. He took off.  The homeowner called 911 from the landline.

“As they were talking, the male subject actually came into the house and had a gun in his hand,” said Gensler. “So the one who is talking to the 911 operator took off running out the back door to a neighbor’s house, and the one that was still left there picked up the phone and continued the conversation with the 911 operator.”

A short time later, the dispatcher heard several gunshots and then silence. Inside the house, cops found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The woman was also dead. She was shot several times. As for the traumatized homeowner, she was found hiding next door with Calcote.

Investigators have not released the identities of the two people who died or their relationship. They say the couple was from Cedar Hill and could not find any history of violence.
