Woman donates late father's prosthetic leg

A North Texas woman is using her late father’s prosthetic leg to improve the life of a stranger.

The Limbs for Life Foundation helps amputees by providing them with prosthetic legs for free.

Those with the organization say many amputees face the Catch-22 of being unable to afford a limb without medical insurance. But they can’t get insurance without a job.

Jennifer Land’s father died two weeks ago. She said this is something he would have wanted.

“When I was going through his things I just realized, ‘What are we going to do with this leg?’ This huge piece of equipment could really help somebody and I don’t want to just throw it away,” she said.

Doug Brooks with the Limbs for Life Foundation said the donation could change someone’s life.

“I tell people that the cure for an amputee has already been discovered. You’re not giving money to research. You’re providing a limb that immediately goes to a human being and changes their life,” he said.

A prosthetic leg can cost between $30,000 and $40,000. But the foundation will find a match for Land’s donation within 30 days.
