Vigil held for victims of fatal Denton County crash

With tears, hugs and candles lit, more than a hundred people gathered to remember a mother and daughter killed in a crash in Denton County over the weekend.

A vigil was held Tuesday at Dove Park in Grapevine to mourn the loss of 26-year-old Ashli Morgan and her 4-year-old daughter who were killed in a head-on crash Saturday night on U.S. 377 in Argyle.

“She overcame a lot of obstacles in her life,” explained Ashli’s friend, Megan Marceau. “She was a great mother and a wonderful friend."

Brittany Bonneville knew Ashli since grade school.

"Oh Lorelei was just beautiful and perfect and smart and sassy,” said Bonneville. “"Great friend. Great daughter.  Her dad got really sick, and she was there the whole time for him."

Denton Police say the Nissan Rogue Ashli was driving crossed the center line and slammed into another SUV with another mom and daughter -- 41-year-old Emma Shaffer and her daughter 'Tita.’ Both of them were also killed in the crash.

"We really feel sorry for the other family too,” said Gordon Morgan, Ashli’s grandfather. “We can't hurt as much because we didn't know ‘em, but we do hurt for ‘em."

Investigators still have not determined what caused Morgan to cross the center line, but detectives say weather, speed and alcohol are not factors. Still, not knowing how this happened is hard for her family to let go.

"We're going to have to trust in God,” said Gordon. “We have comfort from Him and know that one day we're gonna meet ‘em again."

The accident investigation is expected to be completed by the end of this week. Investigators say that's when they'll know what caused the crash.
