The statue of Robert E. Lee in Oak Lawn’s Lee Park was vandalized Thursday night.

Park and Recreation Department workers have been working Friday morning to remove the word “SHAME” spray-painted in big white letters on the base of the statue.

In a statement Friday, the Lee Park & Arlington Hall Conservancy said, “this criminal act creates alarm not dialogue, and the entire community is a victim because this park is a peaceful urban oasis. We have begun the repairs and are installing additional security measures immediately.”

This comes nearly two weeks after protestors gathered to rally for an “un-dedication” of the monument.
