Video shows 1,400 American factory workers losing their jobs to Mexico

A video spreading around the internet shows the moment when about 1,400 people who worked at a factory in Indianapolis lost their jobs to Mexico.

The employees of Carrier Air Conditioner found out Wednesday that the Indiana facility would be gradually shuttered over the next few years to save the company money. Carrier is part of United Technologies, a company whose net income for 2015 was $7.6 billion.

The video shows the employees gathered at the plant as an executive announces the move over a loudspeaker.

“It became clear that the best way to stay competitive and protect the business for long term is to move production from our facility in Indianapolis to Monterey, Mexico,” the executive said. That was followed by screams, gasps, anger and cursing. Some workers walked out after the announcement.

The executive then shushes the crowd so he can continue speaking.

Indianapolis’ mayor slammed the move and said it happened without any warning. He said the city would work to support the employees as the company shuts down its facility.
