Two dead in Melissa murder-suicide

Two people were found dead Tuesday evening at a home in a Collin County neighborhood after an apparent murder-suicide.

Police say they discovered the bodies after they were called to the home in Melissa for a welfare check.

A friend of a resident called Melissa police around 11:30 a.m. after they had not been heard from since Saturday. When police got to the home, no one opened the door after they knocked. They waited on a family friend with a key to let them inside the house.

“Upon entering the house, there were two deceased persons found within,” said Melissa Police Capt. Kyle Babcock. “Right now, we are investigating the circumstances.”

Karen Ann Rolston, 33, was found dead with a gunshot wound to her upper chest, and John Paul Gaynor, 41, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police concluded Gaynor shot and killed Ralston before killing himself.

As neighbors waited outside for any information, they were only told that two people were dead.

Neighbors say they never saw kids, just a pet brought out by animal services late Tuesday afternoon.

A neighbor across the street said she remembers hearing an unusual sound Saturday evening while inside her home. She said since then, she hasn’t heard anything else.

“I really don’t know anything, and I told the police I don’t know,” she said. “I'm going to have to do a lot of thinking to try and figure out what I remember. “I'm pretty freaked out. Melissa is a pretty quiet little town. I mean, I don't know what happened. I'm just shocked.”

A motive is unknown.
