The trial of a man accused of the intoxication manslaughter death of a young mother in college along Interstate 45 in 2014 is set to begin Tuesday.

Priscilla Alanis, a Cedar Valley College volleyball player and mother to one-year-old son Eli, was driving home to Ferris in Sept. 2014 when she had car trouble in Hutchins. Alanis pulled off to the shoulder and was still buckled in when Eustorgio Gomez-Gutierrez slammed into the back of her car and killed her.

Even though state law says there's a possible 2-20 year prison sentence if convicted, the jury can consider probation. With no other prior convictions, Priscilla's family worries Gomez-Gutierrez will go free.

“We want everyone to be here to show support and it's going to be a difficult week for all of us,” said Priscilla’s sister Abigail Alanis.

Alanis's relatives said they expect the trial to wrap up on Thursday - the same day her son Eli will celebrate his 3rd birthday.
