WSJ: 17 women reported assaults involving 19 Baylor players

The sex assault scandal that rocked Baylor University involved 17 women who reported incidents involving 19 players, according to a new Wall Street Journal story.

Baylor regents told the paper in a story published Friday online that the 17 incidents all happened since 2011 and four of them were alleged gang rapes.

Regents said in the story that in at least one case, Briles knew about an alleged incident but did not alert police, the school's judicial-affairs staff or its Title IX office.

Baylor fired head football coach Art Briles for failing to deal with the allegations but had only provided vague details publicly as to what happened.

"There was a cultural issue there that was putting winning football games above everything else, including our values," J. Cary Gray, a Dallas lawyer and member of the Baylor board of regents, told the paper. "We did not have a caring community when it came to these women who reported that they were assaulted. And that is not OK."

Briles’ lawyer told the Wall Street Journal the regents are trying to pin the blame on his client and not on the university.
