Dozens of mothers and children who crossed the border illegally were conditionally released from the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in McAllen on Friday.
The children are mostly toddlers, or younger. They are out on conditional release and will live with sponsors or relatives while they wait for wait for their upcoming court dates.
Volunteers from a Catholic Charities group in the area are helping them coordinate travel to their sponsors or relatives and giving them some supplies to care for their children.
Federal agents did not comment on the criteria for their conditional release.
