Austin officer fatally shoots car burglary suspect who shot him

- AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Austin police say an officer fatally shot a car burglary suspect who had shot him in the stomach.

Police Chief Art Acevedo says the officer was in stable condition after being shot Sunday and was alert and in "good spirits."

Acevedo says that earlier, a security guard at a downtown condominium complex had seen the suspect breaking into cars. The security guard then began chasing the suspect and the officer, who was in patrol car, saw the pursuit.

Acevedo says that the shooting happened as the officer and security guard tried to restrain the suspect in the parking lot of a pizza restaurant. He said the officer repeatedly yelled for the man to show his hands, but the suspect wouldn't. The suspect then shot the officer.
