Giovani Yanez Mejia was the driver of a gold Saturn that was hit broadside at the intersection of Singleton Boulevard and Vilbig Road.
Police said it appears Mejia was heading west in the right-hand land and crossed into the path of another car to make a U-turn.
Witnesses said the crash sounded like a train wreck. Mejia was pinned in his mangled car, they said.
Four other teenagers in the car were hurt, but not seriously.
The driver of the other car left the scene on foot and has not been seen since.
Police are processing his vehicle. Even though he was not at fault in the accident, he could be charged with failing to stop and render aid.
Funeral arrangements are scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at First Methodist Church in Grapevine.
