Suspect drags Cockrell Hill officer during traffic stop

A police officer in the southern Dallas County suburb of Cockrell Hill was run down and dragged by a car Saturday night.

Cockrell Hill police said Officer Daniel Dominguez tried to pull a man over for a traffic stop in the 4300 block of Jefferson Boulevard. The man stopped, but lied about his name and refused to get out of his truck.

The suspect ended up driving off while Dominguez was still holding on to his door. The officer was dragged about 15 feet and then run over by the rear wheels of the truck.

Fortunately the officer was not seriously hurt. He was taken to the hospital and treated for bumps, bruises and a broken ankle.

Police said the suspect could be in a mariachi band based on the clothes he was wearing. He was driving a 1998 red Chevy S10 pickup truck with the Texas license plate GJH2165.

He identified himself as Everado Benavides-Perez, but police do not believe that is his real name. He may also go by Everado Robles and other names.

Once arrested, the suspect faces charges for aggravated assault of a public servant, which is a first-degree felony.
