Sketch released of fake cop in Rowlett attempted kidnapping

Investigators have released a sketch to go with the description of a man who is posing as a police officer.

Last Friday, the Rowlett Police Department said a man tried to con a teenager into thinking he was Rowlett officer and tried to kidnap him. Police say it may not be the first time he's done this.

Police credit a young teenager with being very vigilant for following his gut when he knew something was wrong and making sure he remembered very specific details about the imposter.

The suspect is described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s and 5'6" tall with balding, curly brown hair, beard and goatee and rimless glasses. The teen said the imposter was wearing an orange shirt, blue jeans and cowboy boots.

Rowlett Detective Cruz Hernandez credits the teen being observant and questioning some very real red flags.

“When the police car stopped and this man got out of the car and said that he had been reported missing from his mother, he knew that was not true,” Hernandez said. "This 14-year-old young man looks for details things that were out of character. He picked up on the badge, saying it looked very cheap."

Dylan Gomez was out at the same park doing the same thing that the 14-year-old "would-be" victim was doing: playing Pokémon Go.

“I didn't realize it was a person out there impersonating the cops,” the 17-year-old player said. "I would think he's pretty stupid, especially a 14-year-old. Because a 14-year-old's going to know. And regardless, Rowlett's not that bad of a town."

Police Investigators in Irving believe the same man tried to lure 26-year-old Britney Williams 13 months ago in their city. Investigators say the suspect description is similar.

The car police are asking people to look out for looks like a Rowlett police car without the front push guard. Most importantly, the fake cop car has ‘Rowlett Police’ written in blue letters. The department uses silver letters on their vehicles.
