Shelters across North Texas are preparing for the first wintry weather of the season and are ready to house more people.

The Salvation Army in Dallas has created overflow areas with more than 100 people expected to spend the night on Wednesday, many of them homeless. The Salvation Army says it will not turn anyone away.

Charities and shelters in Fort Worth are also making similar preparations as they get ready to see lines of people needing a warm place to sleep.

Blankets and burgers serve as a simple gift on the eve of a bitter cold front. Bernard Breauh with Community Caring for the Homeless knows what it's like to be on the streets. He was here not too long ago and is now blessed to be able to give back

"Some of them want to help themselves. And this is what we're out here for — trying to help those who want help,” he said.

As the temperatures drop, the shelters quickly fill up.

Sonia Singleton with the city of Fort Worth oversees the temporary shelter in the old police and fire training facility. Cots and blankets are ready to go should the privately-run shelters get too full.

"If all those shelters have reached capacity, then we activate our transportation to go and pick up people along Lancaster,” she explained.

And since the cold comes overnight and it's the first taste of winter this season, several districts decided it would be a good time to remind parents and students about inclement weather policies. However, no delays or closings are anticipated.
