A suspect was killed and several other people were hurt Wednesday morning during a police chase in Garland.

A crash at a busy intersection injured another driver and sent debris into a nearby store, hitting a customer.

The Garland Police Department confirmed officers tried to arrest a man around 11 a.m. at a home in the 1500 block of Kingsbridge Drive while investigating a narcotics complaint. Police say the man ran out of the back of his home, jumped into a red Dodge SUV and drove off.

The officer chased the man as he ran a red light at Shiloh and Beltline roads. Another driver who had a green light ended up hitting the suspect's vehicle.

A witness described the impact at the busy intersection as a fiery explosion. Police say the suspect was ejected from the car after being hit by the other driver.

The suspect was critically injured and later died at the hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was also hurt.

“This impact caused the suspect vehicle to spin around in the roadway, struck a couple of polls in the intersection and ejected the driver,” said Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau. “The driver landed in the roadway.”

A wheel from the suspect’s vehicle broke off during the wreck and flew through the window of a nearby AutoZone. A customer inside the store was injured.

All of the other victims were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police say they found marijuana inside the suspect's car.

No names have been released.

The Autozone will reopen on Thursday.
