Rowlett police pull man from burning SUV

Rowlett police helped save a passenger who was trapped inside a wrong way driver's SUV after it burst into flames.

Two people died in the wrong-way crash late Saturday when the driver of the SUV hit a motorcycle along the George Bush Turnpike. The SUV driver and the motorcyclist both died.

Rowlett Police Officer Bryson Burt's dash camera captured the scene as he was the first one to arrive.

"You had people trying to pull doors off. They were Good Samaritans who stopped to help,” Burt said.

Burt immediately tried to break out the front passenger side window to free the driver and passenger trapped inside the burning Tahoe.

Within minutes six other Rowlett officers respond with fire extinguishers and are able to pull the passenger from the front seat out through the back seat window. But unfortunately they could not save the driver, who they say he was unresponsive at the time.

"You know you make peace with the fact that you tried and that helps,” Burt said.

Burt says he's haunted he couldn't save the driver, but grateful so many people risked their lives to help strangers.

"It's tough to watch. I mean, that's something you'll probably never forget. And you know your heart goes out to all the families of all the victims involved,” Burt said.

Burt does not think of himself as a hero.

"I think any officer across the nation in that same situation would've done the same thing,” Burt said.
